Philosophy
I believe that the preschool years of a child's life are by far the most important, helping to lay the foundation for all intellectual and emotional development to follow. Through nurturing and individualized attention, I take great care to provide a warm, friendly and fun environment for your child, while ensuring they receive the guidance and structure they need. I strive to nurture your child's ideas and imagination, acknowledge each child's individuality and validate each personality. My goal is to provide a place where children know that they are accepted, loved, protected, and wanted; helping to instill in each child a strong sense of self-worth and purpose.
There really is “no place like home”, but I will strive to make my home your child’s “home away from home”. Your child will have all the comforts and security of a home setting as well as other children to play, learn and socialize with.
About Me
Hi! My name is Erika Helnarski and I have been in the early childhood education field for 15 years. I am Lead Infant/Toddler Teacher, Lead Preschool Teacher and Director 2 certified through the Department of Early Education and Care. I’m infant/child/adult CPR & First Aid certified. Additionally, I’m required to have at least 10 hours of training on an annual basis to stay up-to-date with child development and child care techniques.
I have my bachelor’s degree in History with a concentration in Public History (Worcester history specific). I’m a member of Phi Alpha Theta (the national history honor society) and I also held a seat on the Historical Commission of Worcester and volunteer as a Docent for Preservation Worcester.
Preschool Program
For children ages 2.9 - 5 years of age
My preschool program is based on a well rounded curriculum that includes: literacy, math, social studies/history, science and exploration, creative art, sensory experiences, music and movement, imagination and cultural activities. Children will also experience a variety of open-ended & hands-on learning through play experiences.

I was so impressed upon entering Once Upon Amherst! Erika was more than welcoming and although my son had never met her, he took to her immediately. She took him in and showed him around the well-equipped playroom and introduced him to the other children. I could tell that he felt comfortable because he said 'bye mama' and I was able to go off to my appointment while he happily played and made a craft. Erika is gentle, kind, and warm-hearted.
